The use of electronics and instruments in outdoor activities such as hunting, camping, hiking, and fishing have become as important to the hunter as his gun and to the camper as his sleeping bag. Electronics such as GPS units, atmospheric measuring instruments, compasses, radios, walkie-talkies, and game locating and surveillance cameras have become widely used.

GPS, or Global Positioning System, is a satellite navigational system orbiting the earth and their receivers on earth. The GPS satellites transmit digital radio signals that contain data to the receivers on earth. Based on this information the receivers can pinpoint a location on the earth. By using three satellites, GPS can calculate the longitude and latitude, and by using four satellites, GPS can also determine altitude. Any prepared outdoorsman will include a GPS unit as part of his gear, especially in unfamiliar locations.

The compass, as a navigational aid, has been around since the 11th century. Even with advancements in other electronics and instruments, the compass is still a valuable instrument to get your bearing with. Mostly, compasses are built as a sealed instrument with a magnetized needle on a pivot, or floating in a fluid, and is able to point north and south.

Other electronics and instruments include the game monitoring and surveillance camera. These cameras are set up in suspected game areas to confirm the movement and patterns of game. One camera can be used or they can be set up as a group. The game cameras mostly operate without a “clicking” sound or a flash.

Radios, walkie-talkies, and throat mics are important communication tools for a group of hunters to help prevent accidents by knowing everyones location, report game sighting or movement, or staying informed about changing weather conditions.

You push the on button and your monitor screen springs to life. Just what is electronics? According to Wikipedia “electronics is the study of electron mechanics.” To 99.5% of the world’s population that means absolutely nothing. That figure, by the way, I just made up because “who cares?” What we do care about is the convenience of having the use of all the electronic marvels on a day to day basis. Imagine life without your iPod, MP3 player or your computer. It wouldn’t quite be the dark ages, but it would be as close as I would care to get.

Let’s take a moment and talk about computers. Computers are more a part of our lives than we realize. We have the personal computers , like the one you are reading this article on, but they also now control washing machine cycles, stop lights, sprinkling systems, climate control and the list goes on and on. The space program would be lost without the use of computers. The military of nations around the world could not function without computers. In fact, just imagine the disaster at the checkout line of just about any retailer. You get the idea. If it weren’t for computers, life would surely be much more difficult.

We have enough difficulty in our lives, so if electronics and these wonderful computers can continue to give us an edge up then bring it on.

From alarm clocks to wake you up and coffee makers that give you the trouble to decant, the life of a human today is yesterday’s science fiction coming true. There’s a paradigm shift in the method of living and increasing dependency on electronics has, on the other hand, raised our levels of output and efficiency too. A tool for every effort gives us more space, quality time to spend on other pursuits and margin to pack in more into our workday than our forefathers could.

The world of electronics is no more ‘virtual’. It is the real world turning so many things that dwelt only in our imagination so far into the actual and inspiring us to dream further. Electronics have saved us the toil, as the catch line of an electronics manufacturer’s advertisement puts it, to ‘make things better and better all the time’.

Consumer electronics have become a major part of our everyday lives, whether we think so or not. You don’t have to be a tech freak to have most of your life somewhat dependant upon electronics. This dependency seems to grow more and more with each new generation as well. If you run through a typical day, you might notice just how many consumer electronics that you use. Most of the electronics that fulfill a function of daily life are similar to the aforementioned products that you may use in the morning. Many others include things like refrigerators and washing machines. These appliances make everyday chores take a fraction of the time. Our electronics also make us more comfortable with climate control for our homes and water heaters for our faucets. You do not need to shop the latest products to be dependant upon electronics.

Besides consumer electronics that are used for everyday functions, there are ones that are purely for our interest and entertainment. MP3 player, portable gaming devices and camcorders all provide for entertainment everyday. There are also items like computers and cell phones that provide daily functions and entertainment.
